Manuel Arturo José Cuevas Martínez was born in Coalcomán, Michoacan, Mexico, in 1938, one of eleven children. As a young man, he studied psychology at the University of Guadalajara. However, his interest in fashion began as a child after his older brother taught him how to sew. He was particularly interested in fabrics, mixing and matching the textures and colors.
Manuel relocated to Los Angeles in the mid-1950s and found work as a tailor, including time spent at Hollywood’s Sy Devore, whose clients included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and other members of the Rat Pack. But Manuel found making traditional business suits unfulfilling and was hired by Viola Grae, known as a master embroiderer. Manuel eventually became head tailor at Nudie Cohn’s famous western design shop, Rodeo Tailors, where he worked for fourteen years creating western-style fashions for personalities including Roy Rogers and Clayton Moore (the Lone Ranger), as well as designer clothing for performers (such as Elvis Presley’s iconic gold lame suit). In all, Manuel worked on more than 90 movies and 13 television shows.
Manuel married Cohn’s daughter, Barbara, but when the marriage ended in the mid-1970s, so did his affiliation with Nudie Cohn. Manuel opened his own company in North Hollywood but later relocated to Nashville to be closer to his country music clients, such as Johnny Cash, for whom he designed signature black suits.
A philanthropist, Manuel has established the Manuel Fashion Institute to teach aspiring designers about textiles. “Since 1986, I have had interns from the different colleges of design,” he explains. “Most of them are totally unfamiliar with industrial machinery and hand sewing. My vision is to teach them all I know to prepare these interns and build confidence in them for their future careers.”
